A Brief History of District 834

Our Mission: As Minnesota’s first public school district and the premier educational choice in the St. Croix Valley, Stillwater Area Public Schools ensure a rigorous and relevant education where all learners are valued, positive relationships are developed and students are prepared for life-long learning in a global society.

Welcome to Stillwater Area Public Schools

Stillwater Area Public Schools – Independent School District # 834 - has a long and proud tradition. Minnesota’s first schoolhouse was built in Stillwater in 1848, a year before Minnesota became a territory. Stillwater became the state’s first school district just two years later. The district has a tradition of high expectations, high standards and outstanding achievement. It is also a system dedicated to continuous improvement.

From the first one-room schoolhouse, Stillwater Area Public Schools has grown to serve more than 8,900 students in 10 elementary schools (K-6), two junior high schools (grades 7-9), one high school (grades 10-12), and an alternative learning center for secondary students. An early childhood family center serves families with young children, from birth to age 5.

The district stretches 30 miles along the St. Croix River from Marine on St. Croix south to Afton, and covers approximately 150 square miles. The district encompasses 18 communities, including: Afton, Bayport, Baytown Township, Grant, a portion of Hugo, Lake Elmo, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, Marine on St. Croix, May Township, Oak Park Heights, St. Mary’s Point, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, West Lakeland Township, Withrow, and a portion of Woodbury.

I’ve been asked by parents why they should send their children to Stillwater Area Public Schools. For me, the reasons are many. I believe that our schools not only match up against, but in many cases, out-perform others. As a district we rank among the highest-performing school districts in the state, and our schools offer:

  • Personal, caring staff committed to each individual learner
  • High expectations supported through innovation and creativity
  • More choices and opportunities for students – both in the classroom and beyond
  • An exceptional reputation and unwavering tradition of excellence

I have the great fortune of visiting our schools on a regular basis, and each time I enter a classroom I see things taking place that absolutely amaze me. I see some of the most gifted musicians in the state performing at professional levels. I walk through galleries of exceptional student artwork, observe young scientists at work in laboratories, and witness excitement for learning taking place at all levels. On all of my tours, I proudly watch as our exceptionally trained, knowledgeable and caring staff members interact with our students and challenge them to achieve and succeed.

Stillwater has built and maintained an exceptional reputation for excellence across the state and nation. Our schools are recognized as a leader in technology and innovative education. Our students and our staff members are consistently recognized for their successes in academics, fine arts, athletics, technology integration, and more.

The district offers the best of both worlds. It is large enough to provide a wide variety of opportunities for students, while maintaining a personal, caring and individualized education. The district strives to develop learners who are innovative, creative, and prepared for a rapidly changing world. Expectations are high and students of all abilities are challenged, supported and motivated at every level – from early childhood through high school.

We offer learning opportunities for students of all abilities, including exceptional programs for Special Education and Gifted and Talented students. Because of our experience, our expertise, and our size, we are able to offer our learners opportunities to grow and develop at their own pace.

Welcome to a community and a school system built on a solid tradition of excellence!
